Topic: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

i cant get any of the "Objects" in NILE, like emplaced weapons, PSP, generator etc. I get the "cannot create this type" message. can anyone help?

also, is there any possible way to lay down mass stretches of Tiles? (roads) its getting very tedious having to click and place each individual tile. in BHD editor, i could copy and paste multiple tiles, but i havent figured out how to w/ NILE.

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Had to move your post, it had nothing to do with Waterfalls....

Usually with NILE its a Resource Directory issue when you get that error message....
MAKE SURE when it asks for your "game folder" you DO NOT point it to your expansion folder. You will be given the option to choose an expansion folder when you point it to your Joint Operations folder click ok, and THEN another form will open (showing any expansions you have installed).

I don't mean to be patronising, but over the years many people quickly read this instruction thinking that they have understood it, but then go and point the Resource Folder directly to their expansion folders and post back saying that it doesn't work.

I use Ctrl+C & Ctrl +V  for copying and pasting in NILE, in 2D mode.  You can paste in 3D mode I use it extensively for waypoints & foliage, but not all objects are selectable in 3D mode. So you need to switch back and forth.

It's what you do that makes you what you are, not what you say you do.  Going without, teaches you how to handle the disapointments in life, getting everything does not.  When confronted with a issue, use this philosophy. First time = could be an accident, Second time = it's coincidence, Third time = take enemy action.

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Yes, I understand the need to keep stressing it. I know for sure NILE is installed and the directory is set properly, not in the expansion directory. Everything else I can select and insert (buildings, decorations, vehicles, people, etc.) its only the Objects in the Objects Tab that I cant select. I've had this problem since way before I ever discovered Reality. It wont let me add emplaced weapons, the Iranian oil tanker, or the interior cargo ship (though the regular cargo ship found in Decorations in possible to add). Like i said, this problem has existed from the beginning, its not coming from any problem related to Reality, i could just use some help or explanation.

P.S. thanks for the shortcut for Copy/Paste

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Ok, I loaded a blank map + terrain + environment. Added the two items you mentioned without any problem. I then took an existing map and did the same without any problem.

You could try removing the config files in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Nile" (on my machine that is, your path should be similar), then when you reopen NILE, it will rewrite them.  These files are produced when NILE looks at your machine and checks its capabilities, most are logs, but everytime you start NILE it looks to see if they are present, if not, it goes through the setup phase, and re-creates them. The nile.cfg file is used to remember the current user settings, and hence when you start NILE it loads them.

Remove all files from within the NILE folder at the location posted above
(e.g.
3di_log.txt
ghw.txt
gobj.cfg
gobj_memdump.txt
memdump.txt
misldr_memdump.txt
nile.cfg)

This would be a absolute necessity if you were re-installing NILE, so if you've tried to re-install NILE in the past, it could be the problem. Certainly worth a go.

Disclaimer: this is only my opinion, and not that of Novalogic. Its up to you if you believe/use any or all of this information. I have been using NILE since ~2004

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

ok, i deleted the files. when i restart open up NILE im asked to set the directory.

(C:)/Program Files/NovaLogic/Joint Operations Typhoon Rising

To my understanding, this is the mistake you're talking about, setting it in the same file. any other directory and NILE will never open, it just keeps asking me to set directory. where do i place it?

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Your 'GAME folder' is the one with your JointOps.exe in, and the path you posted above looks like the default (but to be sure its actually there, its a simple job to check{use the windows key + E to have a browse for it, to confirm the path}), so if thats where your JointOps.exe file is that that should be correct.
When you click OK, you should get another window open, giving you the option of choosing one of your mods. IF, however you have NO mods (or they are not in the correct place), then this window will not open and it will use the default Typhoon Rising PFF files.

All the issues are typical of not having the file structure set up properly. Incidentally, can you post the paths of your JointOps .exe and your NILE.exe for reference.

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Yes, it gives me the second window where I select the mod of choice (Reality) and the rest of NILE works alright (except what i started the post about).

are these the paths you meant? (searched in Windows key + E)

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Nile
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Games

also, how do i insert an image to here so you could have a visual?

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

You can host the images somewhere like Photobucket, and post the link here, or email them to me using the email link at the bottom left of my posts.

The top path you have posted is as expected (the path top your NILE configuration files)

The second is to the JO shortcut on you desktop, not a true path to your GAME FOLDER
I would have expected to see a default path for your GAME FOLDER to be something like:
"C:\Program Files\Novalogic\JointOperations"

Oh, btw, are you running vista?

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

C:\Program Files\NovaLogic\Joint Operations Typhoon Rising
This is what I use when it asks me for a directory. (the box that won't go away until i select one at the beginning when i start NILE)

No, I'm running Windows XP.
I'll attempt to e-mail you a screen shot of NILE as I try to insert a 50cal. (though, as you may have guessed, I'm not at all tech savvy.)

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Mmm....XP's a prettty sound OS.

Couple of questions:-

A. Can you see the file extensions of your files (i.e. usually three or four letters after the end of the filename) I'm trying to work out if you can tell at a glance whether a file is a txt, doc, html, etc

B. Have you re-installed NILE in the past. (i.e. when it didn't work in the past, did you try to fix by re-installing)

C. Which version of NILE are you using?

D. Do you use Oldmans NLH?

E. Can you place any of the items you mentioned, by using the Population Tool in NILE?

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

A. yes

B. yes

C. Version 1.0

D. Whats that? (Niles Little Helper? Sounds familiar, but I don't think so)

E. I've never tried until now, but it didn't work. It closed out giving me the standard error message for any program "...has encountered error....sry for inconvenience...send error report?"

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

D. Yes that what I was referring to....do you use it?
E. That doesn't help did you try it several times?

Also:
F. Do you have any maintenance software (i.e. TuneUp Utilities 2010 or suchlike, there's a free trial avalable for 30 days)
I normally run TU after I've removed a program it removes any junk left in the registry, and allows a clean install.
G. Can I assume you are running the latest executable?

I asked about NLH, because OldMan has incorporated an modified version of NILE in it, so if you did use it you could use that facility (just a thought).

What I'd like to suggest, is that you re-install NILE in the following manner.
REMOVAL
A. Attempt to use Microsofts "Add remove Programs" to remove it, else just delete the nile.exe and all files in that folder (I'm assuming here, that NILE is in its own folder and NOT in the JO game folder) if you have installed NILE in the game folder, it'll never work.

B. Delete the NILE config files in "My documents" (as described/done previously)
C. Run a maintenance application to remove any remnants from the registry. (I would highly recommend TuneUp Utilities, I have been using it for years)

RE-INSTALL
A. NILE MUST be in its own folder, NOT in the game folder. ( I put mine in a totally separate folder, so if I want to re-install the JO, theres no problem with dumping folders)

B. Install NILE in the usual way.
C. set you Resource Directory, & test.

Obviously you don't have to do any of this, if you're happy as you are, leave it.

Re: Unable to Select items from Object Palette

Well now I feel like a complete dumb@55.
I did all of that with no results, plus I downloaded NLH. Still no objects. So I went ahead and updated NILE. Now I'm running Version 0.89 and I can get all the objects. *slams head into desk*

thanks for your time, please forgive my stupidity. (more than likely I'll be back on in a week with another problem.) For now, I'm off to start mapmaking. Looking forward to more from Reality, thanks again.

p.s. do you know when someone will start hosting a Reality server? Only Hardmaps has one that can be joined publicly, and they're always screwing up the game (never works right, maps stick, etc.) and the only other one is PW protected.

Thats Ok, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but its difficult using this method. Usually as long as both parties persevere, then the problem should get solved, btw, did you update NILE using NLH?

Mmm....No, and I know what you mean, I often have a quick browse (using the link at the top of this forum {i.e. Worldwide Conquest}) to see whats on or whos playing, but theres virtually no choice.  We've shyed away from running one, as to do it properly is real hard work.  If it isn't closely monitored, you end up with what you just described.

no, i just updated NILE using the "Help" tab, then Update.

NLH seems ok, but all I can do is edit AI and emplaced guns. I updated NLH also (separately from NILE) and the updated version (of NLH) doesn't work at all. Zip, zilch, nadda.

Now, as to where I said I'd be back later with another problem, here it is. smile
I can't use the 3D view. When I click on it, NILE exits out. What now??
